Colossal not only has hosted weddings, but has a special area and formation named for them. Envision the trail of taped markers that would follow a person in a billowy dress. Wedding: You cannot get married inside Kartchner Caverns. I’m looking at you, lady two people ahead of me who kept touching stuff. If you do touch something, odds are no one will notice. Colossal Cave tours have one guide who politely asks you not touch anything, save a stalactite early in the tour that has been rubbed so often that it almost glows. At the end of the day, workers clean marked areas to maintain the cave’s pristine nature. At least one carries special tape to mark areas that are touched (accidentally, of course), and the offender may be subjected to disapproving looks. Surveillance: Kartchner tours typically include two or more guides, each keeping a close eye on the group. But if you feel the need to spit out your gum, do it into a trash can.

But show up unannounced at Colossal Cave and odds are good you’ll be booked on the next tour. Timing: If you drop by Kartchner Caverns without a reservation, you may be in for a long wait, if not out of luck should all the tours be sold out. Kartchner Caverns State Park has many incredible attributes, but there are reasons to choose Colossal Cave. Kartchner makes other caves look like geological trailer parks. Once they are warned of the consequences of touching - even slightly brushing against - formations, tourists file into the cave through an airlock that helps retain the moisture and preserve the delicate environment.
